Emotional Responses Can Vary
There is no right way a woman will feel after an abortion. Emotional responses can depend on the circumstances around the abortion or if there was pressure, for example, as shown by a 2023 study.
Some women may feel relief post-abortion, while others may feel sadness, grief, and feelings of loss. Symptoms of anxiety or depression were also shown after an abortion, according to research. It is also possible for emotional responses to surface later, sometimes around anniversaries, birthdays, or other reminders.
Factors Which Can Increase The Likelihood Of Mental Health Issues Post-Abortion
Research has identified several factors that may increase the likelihood of mental health issues after abortion, including:
- Perceived pressure from others to terminate the pregnancy.
- Terminating a pregnancy that is wanted or meaningful.
- Lack of social support.
- Feelings of stigma.
- Personality factors such as low self-esteem.
- A history of prior abortion.
- Feeling unprepared for how you might cope with the experience before it happens.
A 2011 meta-analysis also found that women who had abortions had a greater risk of mental health problems compared to women who had not had abortions.
Every pregnancy decision is different. Therefore, taking time to learn about your options and gather accurate information can help you make an educated decision.
Your decision is up to you and no one else.
