What To Know About Abortion

Abortion is a procedure that ends a pregnancy. There are two types of abortion: a medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill) and a surgical abortion.

According to the FDA, the abortion pill can only be used through 10 weeks of gestation.

A medical abortion works by taking two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, stops the pregnancy from progressing by blocking progesterone, and the second drug, misoprostol, expels the pregnancy through vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping.

Possible risks of a medical abortion include:

A surgical abortion is performed in a hospital setting and involves dilating the cervix, then using surgical instruments with suction and scraping to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. It is used during later stages of pregnancy.

Possible risks of a surgical abortion include:

  • Injury to the uterus or cervix
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Infection
  • Asherman’s syndrome, a condition caused by scar tissue forming in the uterus

It’s also important to be aware of potential emotional impacts; this study shows that some women who have abortions have an increase in mental health problems. Considering your own mental health and experiences is a crucial step.

Understanding Adoption

Adoption is an option if you wish to carry your pregnancy and give your child a future, but do not feel ready to parent.

Today, adoption offers a lot of flexibility and choice; adoption plans vary according to the amount of contact you want to keep with the child.

The three main types of adoption are:

  • Open adoption – This gives you the ability to connect with your child and the adoptive family and maintain ongoing contact.
  • Semi-open adoption – Also known as mediated adoption, you communicate with the child and the family through a third party.
  • Closed adoption – You remain entirely anonymous, and no identifying information is exchanged.

You will never be expected to pay for an adoptive agency, and you may receive additional financial and material help.
