An ultrasound scan is a technique that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. It is especially important for pregnant women because it helps check on their health and safety. Keep reading to learn more about how ultrasounds work and why they are essential during pregnancy.

Types of Ultrasounds

There are two main types of pregnancy ultrasounds: transvaginal and abdominal. Both use a device called a transducer that sends sound waves into your body. In a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is inserted into the vagina; for an abdominal ultrasound, it’s moved across the belly.

Your ultrasound appointment will begin with an abdominal scan. In early pregnancy, you will also be offered a transvaginal scan. The ultrasound exam may reveal important details like the location of the pregnancy, the presence of cardiac activity, and, if you’re having more than one baby. If you (and your support person or partner) would like to watch the ultrasound, you’ll be able to see it on a wall mounted monitor and get pictures if you would like to have them.

Why Get An Ultrasound?

When making a pregnancy decision, you want to have all the facts in front of you.

An ultrasound can determine where your pregnancy is located, which is crucial for detecting an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs outside the uterus and can be life-threatening, requiring urgent medical attention. This type of pregnancy cannot survive.

Ultrasounds also help estimate how far along your pregnancy is, which is important for planning your care. For example, the abortion pill is only approved for use through the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound can determine the exact gestational age to determine your eligibility.

Additionally, ultrasounds assess the viability of your pregnancy. Since as many as 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, spotting a heartbeat during an ultrasound helps confirm that the pregnancy is developing.
